"We saved at least eight months of development effort and approximately $80,000 by using iron Speed Designer!"

- James Whistler, Managing Director of Acid Yellow

CIGateway

Certification International
Swindon, UK

The CIGateway application was developed by Acid Yellow for Certification International (CI). CI is based in the United Kingdom and is a quality auditing and certification company. It specializes in quality assurance auditing and management services for a variety of standards, including ISO9000. CI has 350 employees operating in 26 countries.

Multi-level menus make navigation through the application easy.

CIGateway is a new application built to replace two existing systems; a networked Access database and a PostGre-based web application. It is used internally at Certification International by all the employees, as well as consultants in situations where CI does not have suitably qualified staff available in an appropriate location.

The primary function of CIGateway is to enable auditing a range of qualification specifications to be managed and executed electronically. When a new client approaches CI with a request for a specific quality sector to be audited, CI uses CIGateway to determine which of its auditors is qualified to perform the audit and is geographically positioned to do so. All the audit documentation is managed within CIGateway, and the path through the audit process is recorded automatically by the application.

The system is prescriptive in nature and removes much of the former inefficiency of CI’s business. The application notifies the appropriate people via email of tasks requiring their attention at the appropriate time. It then records the time taken to complete tasks for review by regional or central managers.

Email integration enables processes to be audited within the application.

CIGateway has become the backbone of Certification International’s business. It provides support for every function of the company’s operation, including staff management, resource allocation, client account management, process management, document management, timekeeping and invoicing. CIGateway users range from auditors to administrators and from external reviewers to senior managers. In addition, all of CI’s 26 regional offices have their own regional version of the application, which enables them to interact internally with their own staff and the head office of the parent company in the United Kingdom.

Application Size and Scope

CIGateway accesses one Microsoft SQL Server database, 196 tables, 67 views with approximately 700 web pages. The largest table is the AuditEventLog table which currently has approximately 1,500,000 rows, and is growing at the rate of about 400,000 rows a month. About 1,500 users access the application every day, processing around 800,000 transactions per month.

The Project

The CIGateway application took a team of three developers seven months to implement. All the Iron Speed Designer work was done by one developer, and took about two months including time spent on code customizations and layout work. We spent another month on language translation and implementation.

Code Extensions and Customizations

We wrote something in the region of 6,000 lines of code customizations, which included standard customizations of email notifications and attachment uploading and downloading. The only non-standard customization introduced a fast-track navigation menu that is displayed in some of the screen shots attached. This enables users to navigate to particular offices, suppliers or contacts with a single click. This customization was remarkably easy to build and implement with Iron Speed Designer. It took us just over one month to write the code customizations.

We incorporated Telerik controls for uploading and downloading documents. We also used Crystal reports to display management information.

Page Layout Customizations

We integrated Online Help throughout the application using tab panels.

CIGateway does include page customizations. We used an integrated SQL table to enable the users to maintain their own online help. We introduced a tab control on relevant pages to implement this feature within the application. The tab control reads a specific row from help and the chosen user language to display the desired combination. We also increased the usage of language translation resources considerably.

While we made page customizations, we used the standard Sierra page style in Iron Speed Designer.

Iron Speed Designer Impact

CIGateway was Acid Yellow’s biggest project to date. I believe we saved at least eight months of development effort and approximately $80,000 by using iron Speed Designer. Without Iron Speed Designer, the project would have required at least a year and a half of development time, and we would not have won the contract. We can honestly say the project was absolutely not feasible for Acid Yellow to bid on, or build without Iron Speed Designer.

Next Steps

CIGateway went live about six months ago and is already being extended! Certification International is currently expanding its operations into new countries and new markets. New users and sites are under development.

The next stage of development will be to introduce a user interface for clients so that CI’s customers can access their own audit information directly.
